Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing MP Carol Hughes
Hughes urges organizations to apply before deadline
ELLIOT LAKE, ON – Community-based projects looking to improve accessibility, remove barriers, and enable Canadians with disabilities to participate in and contribute to their communities have until October 5th to make an application to the Enabling Accessibility Fund.
The fund allows organizations to apply for funding only when there is an open call for proposals.
“I think it is important for organizations to take advantage of these opportunities when they come about,” said Carol Hughes, MP for Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing. “This is especially beneficial for organizations with limited funds who want to improve access to their facilities for people with disabilities.”
The Small Project Component provides grant funding up to $50,000 to projects that improve the accessibility of existing facilities. Projects may include: the renovation, construction and retrofitting of buildings; the modification of vehicles for community use; and the provision of accessible communication technologies, such as audio induction loop systems and screen readers.
The following types of organizations can apply:
- Non-profit organizations
- Small private-sector organization (fewer than 50 employees and under $5 million in gross revenue per year)
- Colleges and universities
- Municipalities
- Aboriginal governments
The deadline to apply is October 5th, 2012.
“In smaller communities, programs like this can make all the difference in getting upgrades for existing facilities,” said Hughes. “If there are projects that fit the program parameters, now is the time to get the applications in.”
