MARATHON, ON –  Friday, October 12, 2012, several delegates from the Rendez-Vous 2012 world conference visited Marathon, one of the Northern Ontario School of Medicine’s (NOSM) partner communities that hosts medical learners undertaking Northern rural placements.

During the community visit to Marathon, delegates had the opportunity to tour Wilson Memorial Hospital. The visit allowed delegates from around the world to see first-hand how NOSM’s distinct model of medical education and research is undertaken across the North. Delegates learned about the impact of NOSM on physician recruitment in Northern Ontario and medical education in the community of Marathon.

Delegates also participated in presentations including but not limited to: Introduction to Pain and Addiction in the Context of Rural Community Practice, Before Prescribing Opioids: Assessment and Patient Selection, Safe Opioid Prescribing in the Rural Family Physician’s Office, Comprehensive Care of Pain Patients, and Titration and Monitoring of Patients on Opioids.

“The Northern Ontario School of Medicine’s community partners are an integral piece of our model of distributed community-engaged medical learning and research,” explained Dr. Roger Strasser, NOSM Dean. “Conference on the Move is an opportunity to showcase partnerships like the one between NOSM and Marathon, where each year our students are welcomed as they live and learn in the community.”

The Conference on the Move portion of Rendez-Vous 2012 is intended to provide conference participants insight into how NOSM’s unique education model is undertaken across the North.

The visit to Marathon was generously supported by the Wilson Memorial Hospital, NOSM faculty members, and a monetary gift donated in 2011 by Barrick Gold. The $150,000 contribution from Barrick Gold included $15,000 to support a Rural Remote Health Medical Conference to be held in Marathon.

The Northern Ontario School of Medicine is committed to the education of high quality physicians and health professionals, and to international recognition as a leader in distributed, learning-centred, community-engaged education and research.
