Minister Oliver Announces Re-appointment of President of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission

OTTAWA, ON–The Honourable Joe Oliver, Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources, announced today the re-appointment of Dr. Michael Binder as President of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC). Dr. Binder, who was first appointed to the position in January 2008, has been re-appointed for a five-year term.

“During his tenure, Dr. Binder has provided strong leadership and vision to the CNSC, building upon his long record of public service in Canada,” said Minister Oliver. “Canadians can be assured that, under Dr. Binder’s leadership, the CNSC will continue to diligently oversee all aspects of the Canadian nuclear industry to ensure that public health, safety, security, and the environment are protected.”

Canada has one of the most stringent nuclear regulatory regimes in the world which is administered by the CNSC. The CNSC is mandated to regulate the nuclear sector in Canada and to oversee Canada’s international commitments on the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
