Crossover Insider : Year In Review

TYLER REMEMBERS 2012

Where did the year go? It seems like just yesterday that I was writing our 2011 review and now another year is in the books. I know I’ve said this before, but we could not have gotten through another year without all of our customers. It is all of you who keep our doors open and we are forever grateful for your support. Whether you’ve visited us once, twice or dozens of times – thank you for your business! It gives us great pleasure being able to serve customers from across the North Shore and we look forward to your continued support in 2013!

2012 was an exciting year for us at Crossover Video and Games. We participated in a number of community events, saw our customer base grow to nearly 1500 members and added more products to our already extensive inventory.

KEY CROSSOVER MOMENTS in 2012

MARCH

  • We partnered with the Marathon Theatre for “Gaming Day” as part of Marathon’s Winter Carnival. For no cost, kids of any age could drop by the theatre to play a variety of WII games on the big theatre screen! The kids in attendance had a great time and if the opportunity presents itself, we will hold a similar event in the not too distant future!
  • we held a fundraiser for the Marathon Food Bank. We sold 100 Crossover Tote Bags at 1.00 each and were thrilled to present a cheque of 100 dollars to Mitch Donaldson of the Food Bank

APRIL

  • The Marathon and District Chamber of Commerce held its inaugural Spring Shoparama. The event allowed any and all businesses to sell and display  and sell their products to the public at the Marathon Moose Hall. We were on hand with a table full of used movies at great prices!

MAY

  • We partnered with Pizza Hut for an exciting new promotion. Customers who purchased a Large Pizza and 2L pop from Pizza Hut were given a Free Movie Rental coupon! This promotion has been very popular and continues to this day!
  • The 4 Pack debuted . This has been one of our most popular promotions since we’ve opened as it allows customers to rent 3 New Releases and get a 4th for Free!

JULY

  • Marathon’s Annual Summerfest was held and we were once again a proud sponsor of the event. If you haven’t had the opportunity to attend Summerfest, I would encourage you to make the drive to Marathon to check it out. There are a number of great events that appeal to people of all ages!

NOVEMBER

  • Our store got a whole lot “fuller” as we began selling electronics! Products ranging from Ipods to Blu Ray Players and Tablets were hot sellers right off the bat and our selection continues to expand! (click play on the video below to hear about our electronics)

  • Movie buffs in Manitouwadge got a special surprise as we were finally able to start offering movie rentals there . Through a partnership with Jim Moffat, 2 Doors Down in Hallmarket square started carrying movie rentals in mid-November with New Releases debuting in December. 2 Doors Down receives New Releases every week! Be sure to check them out for all of your movie needs!

CROSSOVER’s TOP MOVIE RENTALS 2012

There were a number of big movie releases in 2012. Through it all, here are the Top 10 Rentals from 2012:

TYLER’s TOP MOVIE PICS of 2012

I don’t get to watch nearly as many of the movies as I’d like to- I guess that’s what happens when you’re always working! But I did get to watch a fair amount this year and a few have stood out. Here are a few of my picks for 2012:

Biggest Surprise of 2012

Man on a Ledge: Who would’ve thought that a movie about a Man on a ledge could be good? I watched this movie with low expectations but it didn’t take long for my opinions to change. It was exciting, fast paced and there were a couple of very good twists! Don’t let the title or critics reviews fool you- this is a very good action movie and I’ve recommended it to a number of our customers who have all enjoyed it!

Best “B Movie” of 2012

Not all movies are released to Theatres. Some go direct to DVD which sometimes scare people into thinking that they won’t be good movies. This is not always the case as can be proven by Crooked Arrows starring Brandon Routh. Although a bit predictable, this movie about a Native American lacrosse team had me captivated from start to end. It was a fascinating glimpse into the Native culture and I couldn’t help but to cheer out loud for likeable lacrosse team. This one is definitely worth a watch!

Best Movie Overall of 2012

What a tough choice but after consideration, I’m giving my Best Movie award to 50/50 starring Joseph Gordon Levitt and Seth Rogan. The movie centers on a young man who is diagnosed with cancer. It touches on a number of emotions including the moment he finds out and the moment he reveals the news to his family. Not many movies can make you laugh and cry, but this was one of them! The acting is fantastic and with cancer being such a big issue these days, it was truly relevant to today’s society. If you haven’t already watched 50/50, I would highly recommend checking it out asap- but be sure to have a box of Kleenex handy!

Well that is all for our 2012 year in review! The Crossover Insider will return next week with updates on New Release movies and games!

Have a safe week and don’t forget to support your local businesses!
