MANITOUWADGE, ON – 6 weeks of learning fun wrapped  up for participating families in the Manitouwadge Best Start Hub’s Esso Math program March 5th.

Kindergarten and Grade 1 students from local elementary schools attended this free program learning and reinforcing Mathematics concepts while the parent(s) or Grandparent(s) who accompanied them benefited from the opportunity to enjoy and encourage their child’s learning 1st hand while learning techniques (including games, songs and more) for reinforcing the math strands such as algebra, numeracy, geometry, spacial sense, estimation and others currently used in the Ontario Elementary Curriculum at the Kindergarten and Grade 1 levels.

At the first weekly session, children received reusable bags which included in them; a teddy bear, number line, estimating jar, box of smarties, and two books (one a program/homework book), a bag of buttons and a baggie of Teddy Grahams all of which would serve as tools, motivators and keepsakes throughout the term of the program and beyond.

The 75 minute/week program was divided into two portions, the first hour being used for parent/child-team instruction, hands on learning, discovery tasks and more while the final 15 minutes of each session were used for the children to unwind with a healthy snack and refreshment at the Best Start room while the adults stayed behind in the library to learn which math strands the day’s lessons related to, how these reflected curriculum standards and ask any questions they might have from that day or in regards to any assigned homework.

The final session March 5th was a celebration of the great learning which had been done in the 5 weeks prior, children were encouraged to invite family members and a combination of parents and Grandparents were once again in attendance as were a few siblings – all there to recognize the Math stars and their development with a Pizza Party and celebratory cake to share prior to the final evening’s session.  The only disappointment mentioned by both children and adults in regards to the program was that it had to come to an end.

There were many thank yous to Manitouwadge Best Start Hub Program Coordinator Kristy Lachance who had facilitated the program with the help of Programmer Lisa Schut (Bilingual Programmer Marie-Pier also assisted on several occasions) as the ladies had been very successful in engaging children and adults alike and making the program a very enjoyable one for everyone.

ESSO Math is an annual program at the Manitouwadge Best Start Hub which has been held for well over a decade.
