Manitouwadge Teacher and Artist Collaborates with Township to Offer Introduction to Acrylic Painting

MANITOUWADGE, ON – The Township of Manitouwadge is offering an Introduction to Acrylic Painting course thanks to a collaboration with local Visual Arts teacher Valerie Newton.  Valerie is a member of the Ontario College of Teachers and is a certified Visual Arts teacher. She has been painting in watercolour, oil and acrylics for over 30 years and is eager to share her passion for arts with others.

The course is intended for adults (16 yrs & older) and will introduce the participant to painting techniques specific to acrylic paint. Students will learn about the properties and qualities of acrylic paint and the variety of uses by the artist. This will include a look at selecting and using colour on the canvas, applying the paint transparently or opaquely, working with brushes and other tools in applying paint, under -painting and glazing, and creating strong visual contrast. Participants will be experimenting with various techniques and creating an acrylic painting with instructor demonstration and guidance.

The course will be held Wednesdays from April 3rd to MAY 1, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. At just $60 for the full 5 weeks (Registration $ 40 plus $20 for the acrylic painting starter kit) this is a great opportunity for those with an interest in arts or just looking to try get out and try something new!   • The materials fee kit does not mandatory, participants can use their own supplies. Paint sets should be acrylic and have a minimum of 8 colours. The participant will also need a pencil and eraser.
  • The starter kit includes a set of 12 Reeves acrylic tube paints, three paintbrushes, palette, palette knife, pencil, art eraser, sharpener, two canvas boards and a carry case for supplies. If the participant already has acrylic paints ; suitable brushes for acrylics ( 1” flat or bright synthetic brush, #5 or # 4 round synthetic brush and a #2 round synthetic brush for acrylics ); and at least one canvas board ( min. 9” X 12”); or suitable painting paper, (140 lb. cold press acrylic painting paper, 11” X 15” minimum size). Some paper will be provided for exercises , but not for the project.
  • Each participant should be aware that starter kits must be ordered from an out of town supplier. If you do not order a kit at registration, but decide to order one later, then additional kits will take time to be received from the supplier.
