Flood Warning – White River and Michipicoten Watersheds

The Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) Wawa District is advising area residents that a flood warning is now in effect for the Michipicoten River watershed. A flood warning remains in effect for the White River watershed. Flooding on the White River, White Lake and the Michipicoten River is occurring.

Flooding occurred in the lower areas of Pic Mobert First Nation, although the water level at White Lake is now slowly decreasing. Flooding is now occurring at the marina area near the Michipicoten River in Wawa, and boat launches at the marina are currently affected by the high flows.

White Lake remains above its upper lake summer operating level and the White River is experiencing very high flows. There is still ice across the upper portion of White Lake, although the southern end is now free of ice.

High water levels will persist until forecast rain subsides. Up to 25 millimetres of rain is forecast over the next 24 hours near White Lake, potentially increasing the amount of water entering the river system. The Michipicoten River is running at high flows. Wawa received approximately 53 millimetres over the past 24 hours, and may receive an additional 25-35 millimetres of rain today.

Forest access road culverts and water crossings are at or near their flow capacity across the Wawa District. The public is asked to exercise caution when travelling in the bush. Please be alert to changing flow conditions.

Residents along the White River and Michipicoten River should monitor the developing conditions closely and are asked to use extreme caution around water at this time of the year, as water levels on streams, rivers and lakes can change quickly.
