Creating Jobs in Northern Ontario for 25 Years … and Counting

Ontario Strengthening Economy, Economic Development in the North

The NOHFC has a proud past and a strong future. I am delighted that our government is demonstrating its firm commitment to Northern Ontario by confirming an annual allocation of $100 million to the NOHFC. This fund will continue to be a key tool for building a stronger, more competitive economy, and prosperous northern communities." Michael Gravelle, Minister of Northern Development and Mines and Chair of the NOHFC

Ontario’s Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) is celebrating its 25th year of building strong, prosperous and sustainable northern communities by continuing to support a range of economic development projects.

In the Sault Ste. Marie area, with support from the NOHFC, three new projects are growing the region’s economy and creating 10 jobs:

  • The Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre is receiving $338,000 to establish a Smart Energy Centre that will help the region take advantage of alternative energy projects.
  • Stokely Creek Lodge in Goulais River is expanding into a four season facility and conference centre with an investment of $282,502.
  •  $975,000 will help Cooks Station Corporation in Bruce Mines launch an oilseed crushing operation.

Investing in northern research is an important part of the Ontario government’s Growth Plan for Northern Ontario. A strong northern economy will help create a fair society and give the people of Ontario more opportunities for jobs and economic prosperity.

The NOHFC has a commendable track record of investment and support for job creation in Sault Ste. Marie and across the North. Today’s investments are fine examples of how the Heritage Fund is helping new ideas take root in our great region.” David Orazietti, MPP for Sault Ste. Marie
