MANITOUWADGE, ON – Tuesday, July 4th Manitouwadge Community Services teamed up with the Manitouwadge Best Start Hub for the annual FUN RUN held in conjunction with Turn Off the Screens Week 2013.

Fewer residents participated, compared to 2012, in spite of blue skies and warm weather, to walk, run, or bike the 1km route which began at the Recreation Centre with sign-in and then travelled down Manitou Road to Adjala following that Adjala to Oshweeken Road to finish back at the Rec Centre where Community Progammer Shawna Patterson had free-freezies for all those having successfully completed the route.

FUN RUN RESULTS

  • Our Lady of Lourdes – 42 students = 39% (5% from 2012)
  • Manitouwadge Public School – 17 students  = 35% (= 2012!)
  • Ecole Publique Franco-Manitou – 6 students =  21% (26% from 2012)
  • High School 8 students = 8% (1% from 2012)
  • General Public – 90 = 4.2%  ( from 2012)
  • Total % of Population = 7.7% (1.6% from 2012)

Though the total # of residents participating declined, 7.7% of residents – ↓1.6% from 2012, it was the student numbers which were lacking as the general public was up from 88 participants in 2012 to 90 participants in 2013.

In addition to overall student participation numbers being down there was also no one in attendance from the schools, with the exception of Manitouwadge Pubilc School teacher Jody Kuzinski, on hand for the student sign-in table. With no teacher or staff representative in attendance from Our Lady of Lourdes, Ecole Publique Franco-Manitou or Manitouwadge High Schoo., Mrs. Kuzinski assisted students from all the schools with their sign-ins.  Whether the township reminded or invited the schools to have someone on hand to tally the number of students in attendance is unknown though MHS did have a parent/teacher/student meet and greet event the same evening perhaps resulting in the absence of a staff member/teacher at their table.

Volunteer Firefighters, Marilyn Tremblett and Justin MacFarling, continue the tradition of walking the Fun Run in full gear. Though MacFarling's full suit (including oxygen tank) weighs approximately 50-70lbs and Trembletts, even without the tank, weighed approximately 30lbs, the two had big smiles as children approached to ask questions. The firefighters take these opportunities to familiarize childrend and adults with their equipment to ensure that in an emergency, people are not seeing what could be a very intimidating sight, for the first time. THANK YOU to MacFarling & Tremblett for their commitment to keeping our community safe!! Photos OntarioNewsNorth.com

Turn Off the Screens week continues tonight (Friday, June 7th) with “Fun with Seniors”, rescheduled from yesterday, at the Golden Age Club from 6-8pm and this weekend be sure to attend the OPP Bike Rodeo from 10am – Noon (also an Amazing Walk II Pit Stop) and Museum Walk About 1-2pm both Saturday and the Perry Lake Trail Walk Sunday from 1-2:30pm.

**Terrace Bay & Schreiber also held their FUN RUNs this week (CLICK HERE) and Manitouwadge Resdidents could certainly learn from the example of their Northshore neighbours to the West as the pair of communities each had an impressive 23% of their residents participate in their 2013 Fun Run’s!

PHOTO GALLERY: There were many Manitouwadge Residents out enjoying the warm weather the night of the Fun Run though not all of those photographed were participants of the 2013 Fun Run.
