Northwest Region Fire Situation June 15, 2013

New Fires

No new fires were confirmed on June 15.

Nipigon Fire 33 was confirmed on June 14 and was located in a cutover approximately 60km east of Geraldton. This fire was 0.5ha and is now out.

Red Lake Fire 9 was confirmed on June 14 and is located near the community of North Spirit Lake. This fire is smouldering at 4.0ha in size and is listed as ‘Being Held’. There are no problems expected with this fire at this time.

There is a possibility that in the next few days as the forest dries out from the most recent rainy weather that a few lightning fires will pop-up.

Active Fires

Currently there are 25 active fires in northwestern Ontario. There are 18 fires that are listed Being Observed; 3 fires listed as Under Control; 3 fires listed as Being Held and 1 fires listed as Not Under Control.

All active fires are reported as showing minimal fire behavioural and there are no anticipated problems with any active fire at this point in time.

Fire Hazard

The forest fire hazard is low to moderate for all of northwestern Ontario.

Do you know how to report a forest fire?

310-FIRE (3473) is the toll free emergency forest fire reporting hotline for northern Ontario. When you call this phone number, depending on your geographical location, your call will be answered by a person in Dryden or Sudbury at the Regional Fire Centre. This person is going to ask you a set of short simple questions such as:

  • Where are you?
  • Where is the fire?
  • Is it posing danger to people or property?
  • Can you see smoke or flames?

This person will also ask you for a phone number so they can call you back if needed.

However, if you are reporting a forest fire in northwestern Ontario and you are calling from an out-of-province cell phone or from a satellite phone, you must call 1-807-937-5261. When you call this phone number a person in Dryden at the Regional Fire Centre will answer the phone and ask you the same questions as above. This person will also ask you for a phone number so they can call you back if needed

Likewise, if you are reporting a forest fire in northeastern Ontario and you are calling from an out-of-province cell phone or from a satellite phone, you must call 1-705-564-0289. When you call this phone number a person in Sudbury at the Regional Fire Centre will answer the phone and ask you the same questions as above. This person will also ask you for a phone number so they can call you back if needed
