MANITOUWADGE, ON – 2013 Canada Day celebrations opened in Manitouwadge Monday with Mayor John MacEachern welcoming those in attendance at the Lion’s Beach before the evening’s MC Community Programmer Shawna Patterson introduced her youngest daughter, Julia Baran, who sang the national anthem in English followed by OntarioNewsNorth.com’s favourite star, Emeraude Charron, who sang the anthem in French – both girls did a spectacular job.

Community Services Director Paula McCloskey was joined by Rec Centre Staff to keep the barbecue going throughout the evening; though they were cooking up a storm as fast as could be the line remained significant throughout as residents were clearly taking a holiday from cooking at home.

The Sandcastle Contest which has become a regular part of Manitouwadge’s Canada Day festivities had some very creative entries, aside from the regular stipulations of using only natural substances (rocks, sand, sticks), participants had been challenged to build something which encorporated the Canadian flag (miniature flags were available for those who wanted to use them).

Live entertainment kept everyone well entertained through the evening as children enjoyed the giant inflatables until at 7pm, Paul Dallaire Welding’s boom truck arrived to assist with a group photo.  Though originally the Community Srevices Department had hoped to make a human flag technical difficulties meant that a simple group shot was taken instead.

The evening was alot of fun as the weather couldn’t have been more perfect, sunny skies kept the temperature around 28oC while a cool breeze off Manitouwadge Lake ensured people were comfortable.
