ATV Crash Fatally Injures Male

MARATHON, ON – Saturday, August 31st, 2013 approximately 3:50 pm, an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) was travelling on a downhill trail with a lone male occupant. The driver failed to negotiate a right turn to continue on the main bush road and went down a steep embankment. The driver, who was not wearing a helmet, was ejected off the machine and sustained fatal injuries as a result.

Officers from the Marathon/Manitouwadge detachments of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to the call along with Superior North EMS and Marathon Fire department. An OPP Collision Reconstructionist attended the scene and conducted an investigation.

The male driver was identified as James BUCKNER, 63 years old from Ear Falls Ontario. Mr. Buckner was working on Stillwater Canada Inc property at the time of the incident and was under contract to Stillwater Canada. The Stillwater Canada property is located approximately 5 km northeast of Highway 17 and Peninsula Road in Marathon Ontario. As a result, the Ministry of Labour was contacted and will be investigating the incident.

A post mortem is scheduled to determine cause of death.
