Ontario Government Strengthening Northern Economy, Creating Jobs

I’m extremely pleased that our government continues to support important infrastructure funds like the Northern Highways Program, ensuring that vital transportation links are expanded and improved for local residents, visitors and industries. Upgrading this section of Highway 17 will certainly provide greater safety and improved roadways for northern families and businesses near Marathon.” Michael Gravelle, Minister of Northern Development and Mines

Ontario is creating 13 new jobs while improving infrastructure along a stretch of Highway 17 near Marathon.

“Our government is improving infrastructure across the province, which creates jobs and strengthens our economy. Projects such as this will help ensure our roads are safe and in good condition for years to come.” said Glen Murray, Minister of Infrastructure and Minister of Transportation.

The Canadian Pacific Railway overhead on Highway 17, east of Marathon, is being removed. As a result of rail line removal, the overhead has become unnecessary. It will be replaced with earth embankment. Investing in roads, highways and bridges is part of the Ontario government’s Growth Plan for Northern Ontario. A strong northern economy will help create a fairer society and give the people of Ontario even more opportunities.
