North Shore Stars off to a Good Start

The Schreiber North Shore Stars Midget Girls performed well at their first tournament of the season over the weekend of December 6th to the 8th at the Annual Queens Showcase Tournament in Thunder Bay.

Competition was very tough with two teams from Thunder Bay and one from Winnipeg. The Stars played hard through the round robin and found themselves in the semi final against the Winnipeg East Saints on Saturday evening defeating them by a score of 2-1 to advance to the final against the Thunder Bay Queens on Sunday morning.

The Stars played a hard fought battle but came up short by a score of 3-2 to bring home second place honors in the tournament.

Coaches and parents were very proud of the girls and their accomplishment for their first tournament of the season. The teams that the Stars faced over the weekend would have already played 20-30 games this season and practice 2-3 times a week.

One of the challenges of our program is the fact that we are made up of players from across the north shore and it is often difficult to get the girls all together for practices. This year’s team is made up of players from Schreiber, Terrace Bay, Marathon, Dubreuilville, Longlac, Geraldton and Nipigon.

The Schreiber North Shore Stars program was initially started to offer an alternative to moving to Thunder Bay for our north shore community female hockey players interested in playing at a more competitive level.

Meeting new players and parents every year from the neighboring communities is one of the true benefits of our program and we enjoy the friendship and team spirit that comes from that.

Our goal is to take in a couple more tournaments throughout the season and play some exhibition games with the Thunder Bay teams to help us prepare for the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association Provincial Tournament in Toronto in April of 2014.

We will be trying to play a few games locally to showcase the Stars for our many fans and supporters along the north shore and thank them all for their continued support.
