MOE Frosty & Free Family Fishing

IMG_0043
MANITOUWADGE, ON – Sunday, February 16th, during the Frosty Days Winter Carnival, in collaboration with the Ontario Free Fishing Weekend the Manitouwadge Outdoor Enthusiasts (MOE), supported by local sponsors and a team of volunteers, hosted their annual Free Kids Ice Fishing Derby on Manitouwadge Lake, a fun day of ice fishing for beginners and novices alike.

Families began to arrive, under a sunny sky with ideally mild temperatures, around 10am. Derby Organizer, and MOE member, Kathy Hudson had a camper set up on Lion’s Beach as the reception/registration office, where kids registered prior to heading out on the lake. MOE volunteers were available throughout the day to offer the young anglers any assistance they needed; snowmobiling participants out on to the ice, drilling holes for them, etc. ensuring a great day was had by all. Wabikoba Lake Cottagers Association volunteers sold BBQ’d hot dogs and sausages, as well as hot chocolate.

The day was a huge success with 101 participants registered, all 51 kids involved received a cash prize and certificate for their efforts. The 3 skilled/lucky anglers who caught fish also received trophies (winners listed below) from the MOE.  Hudson thanked all the sponsors, including Barrick Gold and Turner’s Northwood Adventures, as well as the many MOE volunteers who helped make the day a memorable one for the families and young anglers involved.
