THUNDER BAY, ON – The Francophone Association of Northwestern Ontario (AFNOO) is proud to celebrate another award received by its Vice-President Claudette Gleeson, recipient of the Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award. Claudette received the award from his Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston during an official visit to Thunder Bay on March 29th, 2016.

Claudette Gleeson was selected for the award because she advocates for increased health, educational and cultural services offered to Francophones in Northwestern Ontario, through her involvement with l’Accueil francophone, the Coopérative du regroupement des organismes francophones de Thunder Bay and AFNOO.

Claudette Gleeson was very impressed by the quality of the other recipients: “It was inspiring to be with all the others volunteers whose excellent work was being honoured by the Governor General.”

Claudette Gleeson repeated the importance of volunteering for the well-being of society. More than ever, she wishes to get more people involved in their communities: “You don’t have to be on committees or lead a project. All you need to do is give a little bit of your time for a cause you care about. Every little gesture has an impact.”

The President of AFNOO, Donald Pelletier, is delighted that Claudette’s contribution to the Francophone community of Northwestern Ontario is getting such prestigious recognition: “Her fantastic work is a source of inspiration for everyone.”

Created in 1995, the Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award recognizes living Canadians and permanent residents who have made a significant, sustained, and unpaid contribution to their community, in Canada or abroad. The award also brings to light the example set by volunteers, whose compassion and engagement are a part of our Canadian character.

AFNOO ensures the development and the prosperity of the Francophone community in Northwestern Ontario at political, educational, economic, linguistic, social and cultural levels.
