There are a number of special events taking place at our sites this summer. On June 18, Sault Ste. Marie Canal National Historic Site will be hosting the Lock’s Big Picnic, with live entertainment, games, local brewery tastings and food vendors. Visitors are invited to discover and celebrate local Anishinaabe culture on June 21, during National Aboriginal Day celebrations at Pukaskwa National Park. Lake Superior National Marine Conservation Area will be hosting ArtEscape, an outdoor gallery in Nipigon’s Rotary Park on July 30 and 31. Visitors will be able to see first-hand how Lake Superior’s rugged beauty informs artists and the work they produce. Sault Ste. Marie Canal and Fort St. Joseph National Historic Sites and Pukaskwa National Park will also host their annual Canada Day events on July 1.

As part of the redevelopment of the Anishinaabe Camp at Pukaskwa National Park, a new birch bark cook-tent and wigwam will be built near the Hattie Cove shoreline from June 22 to mid-July, using traditional construction methods. Traditional ecological knowledge will also be showcased at Fort St. Joseph National Historic Site’s first ever Medicine Walk on August 7, when Indigenous wildcrafting techniques will be shared with visitors. As we near the 150th anniversary of Confederation in 2017, the Government of Canada invites Canadians to experience and learn more about our environment and our heritage.
