Marathon Suspicious Person

OPPcolourMARATHON, ON – October 3, 2016 members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Marathon detachment received a report of a suspicious male in the Town of Marathon.  A female reported to police that at approximately 10:00 p.m. she was walking on the trails in the Town of Marathon, and she observed a male subject who was walking in her direction.  The female became fearful and ran, at which time the male was observed running behind her.

Marathon OPP patrolled the area for the subject with negative results and a North West Region K9 unit attended to assist.  The investigation for this occurrence is ongoing.

The OPP want to remind the public of safety tips when out walking that include:

  • at night, walk in well-lit areas, and avoid using the trails
  • be assertive, walk with a purpose that projects you are in control
  • dress appropriately that enables you to move quickly and with ease
  • if you suspect you are being followed, change your direction, walk to an open, store, a residence with lights on, or an area where there are other people, if required, yell for help, and;
  • let someone know your plan, your route, and what time you are expected to arrive at your destination.

Always be aware of your surroundings, be alert for your safety.
