NDP MPP Suze Morrison RE: International Day of the Girl

“On International Day of the Girl, on behalf of Ontario’s New Democrats, I want to thank every Ontarian who is working to empower and encourage girls to explore and achieve their full potential. In Ontario, we need girls and young women to see their skills and their dreams reflected by an equitable society, and we want them to grow up knowing that they belong anywhere their skills and ambitions take them – whether that’s STEM, sports, politics, the skilled trades, finance and business, or the fine arts.

In our society, we’ve made great strides in improving the rights and opportunities that belong to women and girls, but there is still so much more to do. Girls from racialized and marginalized communities continue to face greater barriers, and murdered and missing Indigenous women and girls continue to be denied meaningful justice. And today – as the #metoo movement continues to grow – we’re constantly aware of the need to protect the gains we’re making. Whether it’s making sure consent has a place in Ontario’s classrooms, or fighting everyday to make the online world safe for folks of all gender identities, we know we can do better, for the sake of all Ontarians.

Today is a call to action: let’s work together to build a province where every girl is safe, included, and empowered to pursue their dreams and passions.”
