Manitouwage Men Recognized for Bravery

MANITOUWADGE, ON – Fire Chief Owen Cranney began Monday’s Canada Day BBQ and celebrations by sharing details of the May 21st, 2019 apartment fire on Station Road where the quick actions of 2 local men likely saved lives. The chief recounted, for those in attendance, how Mark Hughes’ and Lloyd Oakley’s had taken action to protect residents of a local apartment building where the pair had spotted a growing fire May 21, 2019.

Cranney explained that Hughes and Oakley were passing when they noted a fire at one of the apartment buildings and how the pair proceeded to alert and evacuate the residents of the building no doubt saving lives in the process. Hughes and Oakley then located fire extinguishers which they used to contain the fire until Manitouwadge Volunteer Firefighters arrived at the scene to extinguish the blaze.

After sharing details of Hughes and Oakley’s courageous actions, the Fire Chief presented each man with a Letter of Commendation from the Fire Department, recognizing their courage and thanking them on behalf of the Township and all Manitouwadge residents. Those in attendance applauded the men, some attendees also taking the opportunity to thank them in person after the presentation.
