SNCDSB Summer Learning Program Highlights

The Superior North Catholic District School Board (SNCDSB) Virtual Summer Learning Program has been a huge success. One highlight was students opening up their Discovery Boxes. The boxes were filled with learning materials such as manipulatives, books, art supplies, games, and fun activities! It was great to see the students’ faces light up with excitement as they pulled out all the items; especially their ball cap design kits; those were a hit! To support building a learning community, each student was provided with SNCDSB Summer Learning Swag Bag. Students received a t-shirt, sunglasses, water bottle and tote bag.

We know that students are more engaged and make stronger connections with hands-on learning so the three-week program is packed with instructional activities, special guests and community partners to support this. During the second week of the program, students learned from Artist Steve Gerow. The students painted a Creative Kitz Canvas from The Creative of either a loon or wolf while learning about the elements and principles of art. Students made Dream Catchers with Dilico and Andrea Zapcic lead students in an upbeat Zumba lesson to promote wellness. Students will use Let’s Talk Science Kits to explore flight and binary coding using beading. The final week of the program, Skills Ontario will be presenting on Trades and Technology to all students from Kindergarten to Grade 8. They will lead K – 4 students building a birdhouse and the Grade 4 – 8 students will build a model cabin. There have and will continue to be so many program highlights!

The SNCDSB Virtual Summer Learning Program has been successful as the students have been engaged in learning and creating throughout the program. The students are excited to learn about their SNCDSB summer learning community. Each week students who attend the synchronous learning, their name goes in a draw for an attendance prize. On Fridays, each class has the opportunity to win through a draw for cool prizes like board games and a grand prize of robotics! The students love the draws! Students also have set achievable learning goals in language and mathematics, like mastering new math facts or sight words. The hope is to see an impact on families as well, as the program has built in many rich learning extensions outside of the virtual classroom including a Celebration of Learning to showcase students’ journey in the program on July 23!
