Emeraude’s Canada Day outfit

Mrs. Brinklow was sweet enough to help Emeraude up this cement beam when she saw her struggling with it...I was releived she stayed close by with her hand on her as the cement could've been a hard landing lol.

Well, it was kind of a crazy day but definetely fun. I had realized on Wednesday when we thought the festivities would be that afternoon that the only clothes Emeraude had which were Canada Day-ish were for cooler temps and so had went to the Bargain shop to see if they might have something (very inexpensive hopefully) that would be appropriate. I still had a gift card from my birthday for the Bargain that would finance anything we needed for Canada Day and so hoped to find a few special things to mark the day in a way that would be fun for Emeraude.

I ended up having no luck as far as a little shirt or something that would do for her (temps were expected to be quite high on Saturday) but they did have great bandanas, and some tattoos of Canadian flags, maple leafs and such for just .48¢ . The little hamster in my head began running and I quickly realized the bandanas were the answer to my dilemna.

I returned Friday and picked up a dozen of them, having yet to decide exactly what it was that I would sew.  I knew I needed at least two to use as actual bandanas as Lloyd likes to use them rolled, sweatband style and I put them on Emeraude more à la Aunt Jemima, keeping sun and mosquitoes from her little blonde head.

too cool :) lol xo

Saturday morning I had yet to find the time or energy to look at them, it had been another week wasted on trips to the hospital for pain meds and too many calls to doctors offices.  I had, when my goddaughter was young, sewed alot of dresses for her, back when I was healthy and was in a different income braket (people do not realize that sewing clothes these days is quite expensive, between the fabric, patterns and notions, a simple dress like the corduroy one I made for Emeraude in the winter, can run upwards of $70) well, her Mom was great about keeping the majority of these as momentos and when Emeraude was born was nice enough to pass them on to her. There were a good 1/2 dozen made from the same very basic pattern for summer (dresses that wash well and were great for playing in) and I would use one of these as my template for Emeraude’s Canada Day ensemble.

just relaxing, waiting for the cake.

The bandanas were a good size and because just one allowed for the entire front or back peice, I had ample fabric to work with. I decided as I placed the peices preparing to cut, that a shirt might be more comfortable for Emeraude as she could simply pair it with her jean shorts and voilà she’s be Miss Canada Day Manitouwadge LOL… I used a bandana that came with a dress her cousin gave her last year as another template to make a more dainty bandana as the big ones seemed a little heavy with her frilly shirt. I made it bigger than the original as that one has been weird in that the triangle always ends up standing above her head but it didn’t help, the point still caught in the wind and kept going up, I guess the next will have to be a little longer towards the back.

I have had alot of comments on Facebook about the finished product and hope to sew up another shirt like this later this week, taking video along the way so that anyone who might have a little one that would get a kick out of being in theme with there next even can give this simple sewing project a try. Check back near the end of the week to find that post.

One of my favourite shots from Saturday :) My dreamy girl.
