Across the Northshore this week, schools were treated to motivational discourse by a local legend. Thunder Bay’s Katie Weatherston, Canadian Women’s Hockey Team Gold Medalist at the 2006 Torino Olympics spoke at Northshore schools this week. Weatherston traveled to both elementary and secondary schools in Greenstone, Manitouwadge, Marathon, Terrace Bay and Schreiber to deliver her presentation.

Weatherston’s motivational discourse focused on goal setting; she involved the children, prompting them to share long and short term goals of their own and challenging them to list how these would be successfully accomplished. Kids were thrilled to watch a short video she played which featured clips of the Olympic Games in Italy which led to her team’s gold medal win. After the presentation, the elite athlete welcomed questions from students and teachers who had been patiently waiting to get a closer look at the medals she had brought along. Young girls seemed particularly inspired by her story as many kept her long after assemblies had been dismissed to share with her the dreams they had, Weatherston appearing to listen as intently to them as they had to her.
