In 2006 a group attending an economic development workshop discussed the potential for a birding festival in our area. In 2007, two Lakehead University students completed a study on birding festivals and in 2008 a number of representatives from Dorion, Nipigon and Red Rock formed a group to plan an event for 2009. The planning evolved into a two day event sponsored by Dorion.

The first festival was held in May 2009 with a tremendous success with 102 species of birds observed. Dorion’s Canyon Country Birding Festival is now incorporated with not-for-profit status and the committee plans to hold an annual event that will involve Dorion and our adjoining communities.

The trails at Ouimet Canyon, Hurkett Cove in Dorion and the Nipigon River trail are recognized as some of the top birding sites in Ontario. Come and join us as we visit these sites. Besides attracting birders to our area the organizers of the event hope that visitors take time to visit the numerous attractions in our area and support local businesses.

Mark your calendar for the 2010 Dorion’s Canyon Country Birding Festival taking place May 15th and 16th, 2010 or visit their website (click the link above) for more information!
