Another Northshore Hotel Closes Its Doors

What Will Happen to Dubreuilville Without a Hotel?

Winter in Dubreuilville at the Heritage Inn

DUBREUILVILLE, ON – Saturday, June 5th yet another sign of northern Ontario’s struggling economy as Dubreuilville’s Heritage Inn, a 19 room and 10 apartment establishment, owned and operated by Kurshid Khan, closed it’s doors.

According to Khan there were several factors which lead to the closing but the most significant one was a growing water bill.  Khan says he approached township representatives in regards to assistance that may be offered to help him save the hotel such as extension in regards to payment deadlines for moneys owed to the township.

At its height, the Heritage Inn employed more than 30 people welcoming countless groups of snowmobilers, ATV enthusiasts, other groups and individuals visiting Dubreuilville for business or pleasure. This is not the first time a lull in business has forced Khan to close the doors of the Heritage Inn. In 2009 it had given the rental unit tenants, some who had called apartments there home for many years, notice and closed; these apartments remained vacant even when the hotel re-opened for short term accommodations.

Dubreuilville municipal representatives approached by OntarioNewsNorth.com declined the opportunity to comment in part due to privacy and confidentiality laws though it was clear they felt the full story was not being represented by Mr. Khan’s comments.

Regardless of the full details of this situation, the outcome will remain the same. Much like the neighbouring community of Manitouwadge, which is similarly isolated by its distance from Hwy 17 (Trans-Canada) and has been without a hotel since the closure of the Manitouwadge Motor Hotel nearly two years ago, Dubreuilville will face some big challenges as time progresses, in regards to its lack of accommodations for larger groups.

Perhaps it will see, as has Manitouwadge, a boom in the number of privately owned Bed & Breakfasts, Vacation Homes and other accommodations providers as Dubreuilville currently has just 2 Bed & Breakfasts offering visitors accommodations.
