Health Promotion Minister Celebrates Athletes of All Ages

Sports will take centre stage in Ontario for four exciting days this week, with the Ontario Summer Games taking place from August 10-13, and the Senior Summer Games, also known as Actifest, taking place from August 10-12.

The City of Sudbury will welcome more than 3,300 young athletes as they compete in 32 sports including rugby, soccer, basketball, and cycling during the Ontario Summer Games.

For many of these athletes, the Ontario Summer Games will be their first multi-sport competition experience and will be another step in their quest for excellence at national and international competitions.

Many of these athletes are in competition and training to represent Canada at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games, and some may go on compete at the 2015 Pan / Parapan American Games to be held in Ontario’s Golden Horseshoe Area in the summer of 2015.

At the same time, the City of Oshawa will be playing host to the Ontario Senior Summer Games, or Actifest.  This event will involve more than 1,200 participants as they experience friendly competition.

This event will showcase the individual and collective talents of Ontarians 55 years of age and better as they inspire us with their active competition in sports including golf, swimming, bocce and tennis.

These athletes of all ages at both events are role models for healthy and active living.  Keeping Ontarians healthy helps us maintain a strong workforce and health care system, which ultimately supports the province’s Open Ontario Plan to create new opportunities for jobs and growth.
