Holy Angels Stays Afloat!

MARATHON, ON – Friday, October 22, 2010, 8 students – Autumn Welbourne, Vincent Speziale, Tristan Houston, David Mayry, Angus,MacEwen Allie Doucet, Olivia Speziale, and Ryan Speziale – from the Grade 7/8 at Holy Angels Catholic School participated in the Annual Cardboard Boat Races, sponsored by Barrick Gold Mine in collaboration with Skills Canada.

Our objective was to design 2 cardboard boats and race them based on speed and weight. The day started by constructing our boats in teams of 4 at Marathon High School, and after lunch, we went to the public pool to race them. Races were designed into two parts: first for time against another team, and then if the boat made it to the finish line, it was timed for how much weight it could hold. Having a lot of fun and trying our best, we raced against many local schools, including teams from St. Martin, Holy Saviour, and St. Edward. We also experienced many neat designs and team work by the other participants.

Participants and staff from Holy Angels are very much looking forward to competing in the races again next year!
