Study To Help Develop New Markets For Forest Products

McGuinty Government Committed to Strengthening Ontario’s Forestry Sector

“I am excited at the potential for this study to lead to new value-added uses for Ontario wood that would ultimately strengthen our forest product industries and translate into new jobs in the North.” Michael Gravelle, Minister of Northern Development, Mines and Forestry and Chair of the NOHFC.

The Canadian Wood Council is looking to use more Ontario wood products in the framing of mid-rise buildings in the province.

With support from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC), the council’s Ontario WoodWORKS! program is studying new technology and wood products that can be used to construct buildings five to eight storeys high. The project includes partnering with private developers to construct a prototype building.

This initiative is part of the government’s Open Ontario plan to create jobs and economic opportunities across Ontario.

QUICK FACTS

The Ontario government is investing $50,000 in this project through the NOHFC’s Infrastructure and Community Development Program.

Under current provincial building standards, wood products can be used as the main structural system in the construction of buildings with four storeys or less.

Ontario WoodWORKS! program is based in North Bay. It promotes the use of wood and wood products in commercial, institutional and industrial projects through workshops, seminars and case studies and by working with architects, engineers and project managers on individual projects.
