One Billion Bottles Recycled

McGuinty Government’s Bag It Back Program Reducing Waste

One billion wine and spirit bottles have been returned to The Beer Store for recycling and reuse — keeping them out of landfills.
Introduced in 2007, Bag It Back encourages Ontarians to do their part for the environment by returning empty wine and spirit bottles to The Beer Store for a refund. This means a cleaner Ontario because there is less waste going to landfills and generates containers for reuse and material to be recycled into new products.

QUICK FACTS

  • Bag It Back recycles wine and spirit containers including glass bottles, cans, plastic and tetrapaks.
  • Three hundred and seventy thousand tonnes of glass have been diverted from landfills – that’s over 54,000 garbage trucks.
  • Over 90 per cent of recovered glass is being recycled into high value products including bottles, cans, carpeting and fibreglass insulation.
  • Ontario has some of the most comprehensive diversion programs in North America, including the Blue Box program.
