McGuinty Government Takes Action On Surgical And Pathology Report

Ontario is taking action to ensure recent recommendations from a report on Essex County hospitals are implemented at Hôtel-Dieu Grace Hospital.

The Minister of Health and Long-Term Care today notified Hôtel-Dieu Grace Hospital of her intent to recommend that a supervisor be appointed for the hospital. This comes in response to the findings of the Report of the Investigators of Surgical and Pathology Issues at three Essex County Hospitals.

The report recommended that Hôtel-Dieu Grace Hospital put efforts into fostering better relationships between medical and hospital leadership and members of the board of directors at the hospital.

As recommended by the report, the government originally appointed Mr. Malcolm Maxwell as a facilitator to oversee the implementation of the report’s recommendations.  However, Mr. Maxwell has advised the province that concerns remain regarding the timely implementation of these recommendations.

QUICK FACTS

  • Hôtel-Dieu Grace Hospital has 1,785 staff, 413 physicians and 750 volunteers.
  • Under legislation, the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care must give at least 14 days notice to the board of a hospital of her intent to recommend that a supervisor be appointed.
