NISHNAWBE-ASKI POLICE SERVICE MEMBERS APPOINTED AS RCMP SPECIAL CONSTABLES

Attawapiskat, ON – January 27, 2011, an agreement between the Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service (NAPS) and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) was made to appoint a main police service provider to a number of islands in James Bay that fall under the Territorial jurisdiction of the RCMP.

Superintendent Howard Eaton, Officer in Charge of Criminal Operations for ‘V’ Division RCMP (Nunavut) joined Inspector Roland Morrison of NAPS for the appointment and review of a Memorandum of Understanding in the presence of the Attawapiskat Head Band Councillor Andrew Koostachin and five of the council members.

Twelve officers with the Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service were appointed as Supernumerary Special Constables of the RCMP.  The appointment solidifies an arrangement for NAPS officers to respond to investigations on Akimiski Island which is located approximately 19 kilometres from the shore of Attawapiskat First Nation and is part of Attawapiskat’s traditional territory.

Attawapiskat First Nation is located approximately 630 kilometres north of Timmins, Ontario.
