Gravelle says the budget continues to support health, education, infrastructure and job creation

The 2011 Budget Continues to Support Thunder-Bay Superior North

“I am very pleased that today’s budget includes commitments for Thunder Bay-Superior North and all of Northern Ontario. Investments in health care, education and infrastructure will help in creating a stronger, more prosperous North for us all.” Michael Gravelle, MPP for Thunder Bay-Superior North.

The 2011 Ontario Budget continues to support the McGuinty government’s initiatives for Northern Ontario. The budget renews the focus on eliminating the deficit while protecting education and health care, and creating jobs.

The budget continues to strengthen Northern Ontario by remaining committed to the government’s five-year Open Ontario Plan. The 2011 Ontario Budget includes:

  • $100 million (an increase of $10 million) to the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation in 2011-2012 to invest in new projects across the North and support strong foundations that foster growth, training and diversification as well as promote new enterprises.
  • A continued commitment to the expansion of Highway 11/17 to four-lanes between Thunder Bay and Nipigon, resulting in improved traffic flow and enhanced safety on the highway.
  • Continued support for the Northern Ontario Growth Plan, which aims to strengthen the economy of the North by diversifying the region’s traditional resource-based industries; stimulating new investment and entrepreneurship; providing Northerners with a greater range of educational opportunities; and nurturing new and emerging sectors with high growth potential.
  • Support for the development of new mineral deposits in the North and Far North, including helping to advance promising mining opportunities in the Ring of Fire, an area of the Far North with potentially large deposits of minerals such as chromite, nickel, copper and platinum.
  • Investments in education by providing more than 60,000 new students spaces in Ontario’s colleges and universities by 2015-2016. There will be room for every qualified Ontario Student.
  • Investments in a comprehensive Mental Health and Addictions Strategy, starting with children and youth.
