COALITION TO PRESERVE THE MOOSE LAKE ECOSYSTEM

It’s the last of it’s kind, it’s been proven a unique and sensitive area, it’s an old growth ecosystem and it’s a half hour from Thunder Bay Ontario. The fight continues to save the area North of Loon Lake dubbed the Brook Trout triangle. MNR and Greenmantle continue to plan to ram through a primairy road network complete with associated clearcutting even though no one can justify the reason why. It isn’t because of the thriving market for said timber, it’s not because all the directed studies are done and it certainly isn’t because the amendment to the Crown Land Use policy Atlas is complete. It’s because they can. Even though the MNR

District Manager, the MNR Regional Director and the Ministry of the Environment directed the aforementioned be accomplished before planning commences. The area in question has never been logged and has no road access, chiefly due to it’s extremely rugged terrain. It is less than 1% of the Lakehead Forest but contains 12 to 20 natural reproducing Brook Trout Lakes. There is nothing like it in the area. Once the roads go in and the clearcutting starts, the fear is, it will be gone. Area stakeholder’s have been fighting this since it was first proposed five years ago. It’s not about somebody’s backyard, it’s about the trout, the pristine waters and watershed all the way down through Loon Lake to Lake Superior and it’s about the old growth forest.

On Tuesday May 3rd, from 3pm to 8pm at the Victoria Inn the MNR is holding

an open house to present this plan to the public. Concerned citizens are invited to attend for a few moments out of their day and express their opinion and fill out a comment sheet.
