New Democrat Leader Jack Layton passes away at his home, surrounded by family

ARMSTRONG, ONTARIO – Thunder Bay-Superior North MP Bruce Hyer issued the following statement on the passing of Leader of Canada’s Official Opposition, Jack Layton:

“It was with great sadness that I learned of the passing of my friend Jack Layton, Leader of the New Democratic Party. Having known him for many years, I and my family are all deeply saddened by this great loss. Our thoughts go out to Jack’s wife Olivia, his children Mike and Sarah, and his entire family.

“I will always remember Jack for pursuing what was right with rare tenacity. He was a champion for everyday Canadians, and has inspired so many of us to never give up in striving for a better society.

“Jack fought his final battle against cancer just as he fought for a better Canada: with courage and determination, no matter the odds. Until the very end he was full of ideas and thoughts about the future. Jack loved Canada, and he asked that people carry on to build a country of greater equality, justice, prosperity and opportunity for all Canadians. Building that country of our hopes is the greatest way we can respect his legacy.”

Messages to Layton’s family can be sent at www.ndp.ca/express_your_condolences or dropped off at the constituency office at 69 North Court Street in Thunder Bay. A Book of Condolence is available at that office for those that wish to sign.
