MARATHON, ON – Marathon Cross-Country Ski and Snowshoe Club executives Leslie and Kim Ransom were pleased to announce recently, the opening of two new trails for snowshoers in Marathon. Snowfall in the past few weeks has allowed the newly completed and upgraded Cascade and BIG S snowshoe trails to be explored and enjoyed.

The total length of these, including out and back connector trail, is about 4km. And Leslie and Kim assure snowshoers that they will be tired after this jaunt. Spruce stands, Birch stands Poplar stands and hills, lots of hills. These trails have been carefully planned and are all within 20 minutes of the ski trails at any time.

The Marathon Cross-Country Ski & Snowshoe Club is a volunteer based club. All of their activities, lessons, trail grooming and management are done by volunteers and the group thanks them for their dedication.  The club encourages families to join and ski or snowshoe together.  They cater to all ages; their youngest members are towed in a pulk by their parents. Their oldest member (and a frequent skier) is 90 years of age.

Remember, volunteering in your community is a great way to meet new people, gain vital work experience, and most of all HAVE FUN while contributing to keeping your community’s recreational, cultural and social programs alive and well.

From the Editor: Marathon and area residents are also reminded that modern snowshoes and snowshoeing equipment are available at Manitouwadge’s Freehawk Enterprises so if you are looking for an exciting sport that promotes health and wellness while challenging you to explore the great outdoors that we have in our own backyards, visit Louis to get outfitted with your new snowshoes then head down to the Marathon Cross-Country Ski and Snowshoe Club to try out their new trails!
