Gutsy Wolverines battle their way to victory over Voyageurs!

MANITOUWADGE, ON – Playing in front of an extremely boisterous crowd was a huge help as the Wolverines dethroned the same Voyageurs who defeated them in 2010. The Wolverines hit, blocked, and dug their way over École Secondaire Catholique La Verendyre (SSSAA) 25-8, 25-15 and 25-9 and then in front of a jam packed gymnasium at 7pm they defeated the Voyageurs 25-20, 15-25, 25-19, 25-19 in the round robin portion of the tournament. The game meant eveything in terms of the team’s confidence going in to Friday’s championship match. The Voyageurs Coach told OntarioNewsNorth.com at the end of the evening that “After winning the 2nd set 15-25 they seemed to get too comfortable” that mistake cost them the game and had them going into Friday morning’s match with their confidence seemingly diminished.
The Wolverines led throughout most of the first set, holding off the Voyageurs and their outstanding hits, taking the match 27-25. They lost 25-22 in set two before thumping the Atikokan squad 25-14 in the third set. In set number 4, the host Wolverines showed their grit and fought back to take a 18-16 lead and held off the attack from the NorWOSSA silver medalists before winning 25-22. OntarioNewsNorth.com broadcast the morning’s action to an audience that included Wolverines fans from Egypt, Newfoundland and Sault Ste. Marie as well as those cheering on the Voyageurs from Atikokan. The Wolverines are heading to Manitoulin Island this week where they will represent the Northwestern Ontario Secondary School Athletic Associations (NWOSSAA) at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) Championships. They made history winning NWOSSAA gold, the first Senior Boys Volleyball team from Manitouwadge High School ever to claim the boys volleyball banner, and Thursday their historic journey continues as they are the 1st boys volleyball team from the school to reach OFSAA!
