Manitouwadge Snow Removal Maintenance and Winter Parking

Have you been wondering why it matters where a property owner or tenant deposits the snow they remove from their property or private land?

When snow is normally accumulated on the streets and areas in town, the Township removes the snow from these areas (public lands) and a cost is incurred for snow removal. These costs include the time, labour and equipment to remove the snow by the Township. These snow removal costs can increase greatly when the Township is faced with additional deposits of snow after a homeowner deposits the snow from their property (private property) onto or across roadways, sidewalks or other public lands by various means. When additional snow is deposited onto or across the sidewalks, streets and it freezes, it is difficult for the Township snow removal equipment to remove this build up of snow.

It is important all homeowners ensures that any snow removal person or contractor who removes snow from their property, will deposit the snow from their yard and back onto their property (private property) or have the snow hauled away to a designated snow dumping site. Homeowners or snow removal persons are asked to contact the Public Works Office at 826-3227 Ext 230 for designated snow dumping areas prior to the dumping of snow.

Homeowners or tenants are asked to be mindful of this information and refrain from depositing any snow onto or across public or other private lands. Such a practise may cause a homeowner and/or a hired person/contractor to incur penalties under our existing Land Maintenance By-law 97-09, Section (4.3) which states, “No person shall deposit or cause to be deposited snow or ice from private lands onto public lands,” or Section (4.2) “No person shall deposit or cause to be deposited snow or ice accumulations on lands that may create a health, fire or accident hazard”.

The Township may also recover costs in the future to remove snow deposited onto public lands by a homeowner or a hired snow removal person, as provided for under the Municipal Act. These costs can be invoiced to the property owner, snow removal person and/or levied against the persons property taxes.

It is hopeful the sharing of this information with the public will help the Township resolve snow removal problems from occurring as mentioned herein, in an effort to decrease the time/costs associated with snow removal operations and the monitoring/follow-up of snow removal complaints necessary at times to ensure compliance.

The Township has started snow removal operations therefore, winter parking is in effect ,

“No person shall park any vehicle on any streets In Manitouwadge between the hours of 2:00 am and 6:00 am.”
