NSSSAA Athletes Claim Three of the five gold medals awarded at 2012 NWOSSAA Badminton Championships

THUNDER BAY, ON – The North Western Ontario Secondary School Athletic Associations’ (NWOSSAA) 2012 Badminton Championships were held in Thunder Bay last week and those athletes who qualified as NWOSSAA representatives (GOLD/SIVER from each event) to compete at the 2012 provincial level, Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA),  championships once again include a majority of North Shore Secondary School Athletic Association (NSSSAA) Champions.

Eleven of the sixteen athletes who qualified on Wednesday are from the North Shore Secondary School Athletic Association (NSSSAA includes schools from Wawa to Nipigon and Greenstone to Hornepayne) and the only Superior Secondary School Athletic Association (SSSAA Thunder Bay-concentric division whose athletes faced off against the North Shore athletes at NWOSSAA hosted in Thunder Bay)  athlete, Courtney Brewer, also hails from Maitouwadge originally. Brewer captured the Girls’ Singles title, defeating Whitney McParland from Lake Superior High School (Terrace Bay/Schreiber) and Tamara Tait from Michipicoten High School (Wawa).
The top two teams in each event will travel to Stratford, Ontario May 3rd to 5th to compete at the provincial championships – OFSSAA.

  • SILVER – Elaine Milks-Alex Clark (Manitouwadge),
  • BRONZE – Sable Brand (Manitouwadge),

Men’s Doubles

  • GOLD – Ronnie Fogarty-Kevin Gauthier (Manitouwadge),
  • SILVER – Hudson Hunter-Brandon Sullivan (Manitouwadge)

SENIOR TEAM CHAMPIONS

  • 1st PLACE  – Manitouwadge High School Wolverines – 50 points,
  • 2nd PLACE – St. Ignatious High School (Thunder Bay) – 21 points

2012 NWOSSAA JUNIOR BADMINTON CHAMPIONSHIPS

THUNDER BAY, ON – In Junior play the Manitouwadge Mixed Doubles team of Mercedes Hunter and Jordan Tiedtke who remained undefeated this season captured Gold. The Junior Girl’s Doubles team of Paddock-Korytko-Amos from Michipicoten High School in Wawa also claimed their Gold medal standing undefeated.

Junior Boy’s Doubles team of Alex Brown and Skylar Christianson from Marathon High School earned Silver, as did their fello Falcons the Girl’s Singles Silver medalist Anna Bertin and Boy’s Singles Bronze medal winner, Chris Rolf von den Baumen.   Kenora’s Beaver Brae Secondary School won the 2012 NWOSSAA Junior Badminton Championship Team title with 60 points while the Falcons from Marathon High School claimed 2nd place with 28.5 points and Manitouwadge High School’s Junior Wolverines shared third place with
