WAWA, ON – Well mother nature, once again, did not agree with a full 18 holes being played at the Michipicoten Golf Course. Heavy rains ruined the chances of 57 male and female golfers hitting their golf balls over 18 holes. This was a repeat of when Wawa hosted 6 years previous in 2006.

The rain did not dampen the spirits of the young golfers however, after the drenched golfers came to the clubhouse at 12:30pm it was time for players and coaches to decipher the white balls of paper that the golfers pulled out from their pockets. The score cards were completely destroyed. Some had names but no scores, and some had very faded pencil marks etc. When the score cards were finally verified by coaches, players and the convener,  winners were announced.

Boys’ first place finishers and banner winners were Marathon with a low gross of 183. Second place was claimed by Manitouwadge with a low gross score of 200. Third place finish went to Wawa’s École St. Joseph with a low gross score of 202. All three teams advance to Kenora to play in the North Western Ontario Secondary School Association (NWOSSA) 2012 Golf Championship Thursday, September 27th.

In the boys individual championship, Marathon had the strongest golfer as Skylar Joy shoot an impressive score of 40 in awful weather conditions. The girls’ champion, Lindsay Nutbrown of Marathon had an equally impressive score of 51.

Congratulations to these fine young golfers and the rest of the field competing in Kenora on the 27th.
