Thunderhawks Women’s Hockey – October 21 Game Recap

THUNDER BAY, ON –  The Confederation College Thunderhawks were unable to make it five straight wins as they lost 3-2 to the Thunder Bay Midget A Queens in women’s hockey action last night at Neebing Arena.

Two quick third-period goals allowed the Queens to slip past the Thunderhawks and hold onto a one-goal margin despite some intense pressure by Confederation College in the last minute of play.

Thunderhawks forward Crystal Duhaime opened the scoring at 13:12 of the first period off of a beautiful feed from Savanna Gamache. Also assisting on the goal was Kylie Cornell. The Queens’ Whitney Scott got the equalizer, a power play goal at 11:00 of the second, with assists from Kristin Martin and Marielle Orr. Fort Frances product Courtney Easton put the Thunderhawks back ahead at 5:21, with helpers from Crystal Duhaime and fellow Fort Frances native Melanie Scott. With just over five minutes left in the third, two goals about a minute apart scored by the Queens’ Mikayla Sparks, assisted by Miranda Mellerup and Allison Pages, and Taylor Basaraba, assisted by Allison Pages were too much for the Thunderhawks squad. Short two players and with three others suffering from stomach ailments, the clock seemed to get the best of them.

Thunderhawks standout Savanna Gamache sustained an upper body injury during the game and was evaluated later in hospital. She was released and is listed as day-to-day with the possibility she may return in time for next weekend’s Rainy River Community College Can-Am Tournament in International Falls, Minnesota.

As part of that tournament, the Thunderhawks next game action takes place on Friday against the Minot State University Beavers. They play the Manitoba Women’s Junior Hockey League Predators on Saturday and the Michigan State University Spartans on Sunday.
