MARATHON ON – Sunday February 3, 2013 approximately 10:20 pm, officers from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Marathon detachment were advised of a motor vehicle collision involving two transports on Hwy 17 approximately 15 km west of Marathon ON.

A westbound commercial motor vehicle was going down a hill near Red Sucker creek and lost control while attempting to round the curve at the bottom of the hill. The truck flipped onto its side blocking the entire highway. A second westbound commercial motor vehicle was unable to avoid the first flipped transport and struck the trailer. The second transport ended up in the ditch.

Both occupants of the first transport were taken to Wilson Memorial General hospital in Marathon, treated and released. The driver of the first transport was charged with Fail to drive in a marked lane.

The highway was closed for 3 hours while emergency crews and tow trucks cleaned up the scene. The Ministry of the Environment was consulted as diesel fuel leaked from the fuel tanks of the transports.
