MANITOUWADGE, ON– Gypsy Jazz trio “The Lost Fingers” just celebrated their 20th country visited and shared many memories from these travels with audience members in Manitouwadge Monday, March 25th where they performed as part of the 2012-13 Nite on the Town Entertainment Series. Alex Morissette (backing vocals, double bass), Dr. Christian Roberge (lead vocals, guitar) and Byron “Maiden” Mikaloff (backing vocals, guitar) originate from ‘La Belle Province’ and their French Canadian stylings can be seen in their choice of fashion, their humour and in many of the songs they perform.
Personally I was not sure what to expect in regards to the Gypsy Jazz genre, and I struggled even more to imagine how the bands re-arranging of classic hits from the 80’s would sound in this genre. I quite pleasantly surprised, what a treat! The Lost Fingers were unlike anything I had ever had the pleasure of hearing before and though the upbeat tempo of their arrangements was a constant, the diversity of instruments and genre’s which they used as a platform for their songs varied considerably.
To say that Alexandre Blais seems to enjoy his 'work' is an understatement; he smiled as he played, seemed to share mischevious looks with fellow band members as if remembering a good joke and just radiated positivity. For myself, this was as much a part of what made the performance so enjoyable as was the great music. Photos OntarioNewsNorth.com
My only disappointment worth mentioning would be that their publicist hadn’t better communicated the significant amount of French content (from storytelling to songs) which is included in their performance as I personally believe their would have been a larger audience had Manitouwadge’s Franco-Ontarian population been aware of this.
The Lost Fingers unique performance was an enjoyable evening and I could not resist buying one of their CDs for my 7 year old, who usually accompanies me to the NOTES performcances, on my way out. Big thanks to Natalie Labbee, and NOTES, for providing Manitouwadge music lovers with yet another incredible performance by some very talented Canadian musicians and to The Lost Fingers for braving the Northern Ontario winter highways to make their way to Manitouwadge and treat us to their very unique style.
