RED ROCK, ON – Wednesday, April 3, the Superior North Catholic District School Board hosted a Student Leadership Day at St. Hilary School in Red Rock. Each of the board’s nine schools were invited to send three or four Grade 7 and 8 students.

The Leadership Day was the second one that the school board hosted this year, the first being in September (Click here for article/photos of Leadership Day in Sept.2012).  The goal of the day was to help students become leaders in the board’s Brick by Brick project. In partnership with Free the Children, the Superior North Catholic District School Board has been working toward building a school in Ngosuani, Kenya.

Jennifer Nichols, a student at St. Hilary School commented, “The day was very helpful and I’m glad we had it. It gave us time to plan what we are going to do to raise money and awareness.”

The students were able to share their plans and build upon one another’s ideas with their peers from other SNCDSB schools – something that they don’t get to do often because of the large distances between towns. Attempting to keep the conversation going after students return to their schools, they were shown how to have online conversations using the provincial Learning Management System usually used by teachers for blended learning.

Grade 8 student Alex Halonen, who helped plan and co-facilitate the event along with classmate Jon Mayry, summed it up nicely saying “The leadership day showed us that working together makes it easier to solve a problem.”

To date, the students have raised over $6000 out of the $8500 required to build a school. A thank you video from Adrianne Gore, Free the Children’s Educational contact for our region, inspired students to continue working toward their goal and helped them realize the importance of the Brick by Brick project.
