Correspondence RE:Industrial Rd. – MPP Michael Mantha Continues to Pressure for Industrial Road Maintenance

FROM THE EDITOR: Thank you to MPP Michael Mantha’s office for sharing the correspondence below with OntarioNewsNorth.com that we may keep the public informed as to the ongoing efforts, by the Algoma-Manitoulin MPP, to keep the issue of repairs to Industrial Road (a.k.a. Hwy 625) moving forward.  It was noted by Mr. Mantha’s office that the letter dated March 6, 2014 was mailed out today and so will not have been received yet by Minister Glen Murray though it would seem reasonable to expect he will be receiving it without much delay.

FROM THE EDITOR: It seems, in my opinion, that Minister Orazietti has been misinformed or is lacking information in regards to travel between Manitouwadge and the Municipality of Greenstone and/or Hillsport. Unfortunately whomever has advised Minister Orazetti seems to be making the same recommendation as MNR Wawa District’s Bill May had made in a letter June 12, 2013 (Click here to review) for travelers to use ‘alternate routes’ the describe as being available. Any ‘alternate route’ that may connect Manitouwadge to Hillsport or Greenstone (via several logging roads of varying quality or frequency of use) are familiar enough to few people, other than employees of area forestry operations, to be traveled or navigated safely. There is not reliable/consistent cell-phone reception in these areas and, with several unmarked, or poorly marked, road-connections to make on what is being referred to as ‘alternate routes’ it is quite inadvisable that anyone venture into the bush who is not very familiar with the routes – this in contrast to the Industrial Road which had been one, very clear road which could be safely/successfully used by the average traveler. Additionally, in his letter (above) Minister Orazietti refers to “Alternative access routes” being available to the communities of Hillsport and Manitouwadge for necessary supplies and accessing emergency services however, in a letter to Police and EMS services in in December, from the Fire Chief this did not seem to be the case. Fire Chief Owen Cranney’s letter (CLICK HERE to read) explained that some emergency services, on the ‘Caramat Road’ were being suspended until further notice due to lack of maintenance to the road (there was no mention of any ‘alternate routes’ available).
