The majority of workers began leaving yesterday morning (April 13, 2020) as Impala Canada, which owns the mine, said it had developed a safe and orderly site departure plan for employees in collaboration with the Thunder Bay District Health Unit (TBDHU).

Workers were being directed to self-quarantine at home or at a Thunder Bay, hotel until April 27th (see image at top) a significant change from the original quarantine order that TBDHU had made in which the employees were to remain quarantined on-site. Impala Canada had shared via it’s Facebook page information regarding what workers exiting yesterday could expect on their way out, including that they wouldn’t be:

As of Sunday night Impala Canada and TBDHU were sharing that there were 5 new cases of COVID-19 connected to LDI; 2 self-isolating on-site, and 3 self-isolating off-site and that testing of 2 additional symptomatic individuals in the isolation bunk-house was underway.

As of April 13, the mine is in care and maintenance mode. Impala Canada has said in a statement that plans to reopen will be communicated “in due course” without providing a target date for reopening the mine.
