MANITOUWADGE, ON – Having followed a long weekend, this was a short week at playground but it was jam-pack full of fun none-the-less.

Tuesday we made jungle animals and went to the library for Storytime, the challenge of choosing reading material which would appeal to everyone in our large age group was met and the children were attentive right to the end.

Wednesday was an eventful day.  The kids had fun  tye-dying the old, white t-shirts they had been asked to bring from home, it was interesting to see the variety of results which the tye-dye technique poduced.  We also  drew pictures with drizzly goo, and played with homemade play dough which was made by the participants who were thrilled to bring their creations home .  For a look at how busy we’ve been, enjoy browsing the  ‘Playground Art Gallery’ at your own leisure as it is  now on display at the Rec Centre outside the skate sharpening room; the young artists have worked hard colouring and decorating their various chef d’oeuvres and we ask that you please ‘look but don’t touch’.

Thursday we had a change of plans due to unexpectedly wet weather; we had originally planned a trip to the Lion’s Beach but opted to stay at the Rec Centre and make the most of everything available there instead. The kids used their imaginations to create many different ‘stores’ imitating the real-life situations they observe adults in day-to-day.  Free time gave everyone an opportunity to unwind before watching the animated movie “Over the Hedge” it was enjoyed by all, the roaring laughter echoing accross the Rec Centre. Following this it was time for a science experiment wich would have some very tasty consequences…

Each child chose his/her own flavour of juice which they used, with our assistance, to make popsicles.  They enjoyed helping to stir and mix ingredients and reaping the rewards of their labour – eating the fresh popsicles they had made.

Today (Friday), much like yesterday when we cancelled a trip to the Lion’s Beach re-scheduling it for today, some impromptu  plan amendments were required.  Cold weather was the culprit which  forced cancellation of our beach plans this time but once again, we took it in stride, teaching the children to make the best of any situation as they enjoyed the  homemade smoothies, slushies and the popsicles they made the previous day.

Another great week has come to an end, we are having alot of fun playing, teaching and learning from the kids who surprise us all the time with their clever, creative ideas and enthusiasm for learning.  We are happy to be sharing each afternoon with our young friends and invite caregivers of children 4 – 11yrs of age to have them join us by registering your child for Playground at the Township.

Playground participants please remember to put on sunscreen before coming and have appropriate outdoor clothes (hat, sunglasses, coat if it’s chilly) as we will be advenuring outside as often as possible.

See you next week!
