Youth charged w/Attempted Murder

POLICE INVESTIGATE DEATH IN BEARSKIN LAKE

(BEARSKIN LAKE, ON) – During the early morning hours of August 15, 2010 members of the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service (NAPS) were called to the nursing station in Bearskin Lake. Upon arrival, NAPS officers were advised that one male had been pronounced deceased and that a second male, 19-year-old Leonard KAMENAWATAMIN from Bearskin Lake had been injured. KAMENAWATAMIN was subsequently flown to Meno-Ya-Win Health Centre in Sioux Lookout for treatment.

At the request of the NAPS, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) North West Region Crime Unit, under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch was called in to assist in this investigation. The investigation is being conducted under the direction of Detective Inspector John HORNE of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, Thunder Bay. 

The deceased is Neil FIDDLER, a 20-year-old male from Bearskin Lake. A post mortem examination will take place at the Chief Coroners Office in Toronto on August 18, 2010. 

The investigation is continuing.

Currently in custody is a 15-year-old male from Bearskin Lake. Subject to the Youth Criminal Justice Act the male cannot be identified. He has been charged with Second Degree Murder and Attempt Murder contrary to the Criminal Code. He is currently in custody and will appear in Kenora court August 18, 2010.
