Holy Angels spells S-U-C-C-E-S-S

THUNDER BAY, ON – March 6, Holy Angels’ Gr. 8 student, David Mayry competed in the 2011 Canspell National Spelling Bee.  David qualified to represent Holy Angels at a School Wide Spelling Bee held last November.  Students from Gr 1-3 competed for fun, and Gr. 3 student, Cosimo Figliomeni was the top speller.  Students from Gr. 4-8 competed for the opportunity to advance to Thunder Bay, and David was the top speller.

In Thunder Bay, David placed 16th out of 36 students and he was very proud of his accomplishment. When asked, David said: “I thought it was a pretty good experience because I got to meet new people and spell harder words.”  David had 4 words with “wiseacre” finally catching him – interestingly, the definition of ‘wiseacre’ is ‘a person who thinks that he knows everything’.  Although David didn’t know everything that day, he took the experience in stride and represented himself and his school with pride.  When asked about advice for other students in the future, David’s thoughts were, “Just think about what you are going to spell and study. Take your time because you have 2 ½ minutes.”

Congratulations to David, and to all the students who entered the spelling bee!
