Forest fire situation update Northeast Region

No new fires were reported in the Northeast Region on May 20.  One new fire was reported early this morning.  Sault Ste. Marie 11 north of Elliot Lake is not yet under control at 1.0 hectare in size.  It is expected to be classified as being held sometime this afternoon or this evening. No issues are anticipated.

The Northeast Region dispatched a total of 21 additional personnel to Alberta the morning of May 20.  One radio operator and a 20 pack of FireRangers were deployed.

Rain is expected throughout most of the Northeast Region on Sunday and Monday.

When cleaning up wood and grass debris, the ministry suggests composting, chipping or taking debris to a landfill site instead of burning.  If you still decide to burn debris, residents are reminded that they are required to follow safe outdoor fire guidelines. In particular, there are restrictions on day burning of brush and grass. Fires are to be started no sooner than two hours before sunset, be extinguished no later than two hours after sunrise, attended at all times and put dead out before leaving.

If you live within a municipality, contact your local municipal office or fire department BEFORE burning.
