ACADEMY AWARD WRAP-UP

Any movie lover tends to pay close attention to what some deem to be the biggest night of the year for the industry- Academy Awards Night! This year marked the return of Billy Crystal as host and, aside from quite a few pokes at Kodak (the troubled namesake of the building in which the ceremony is held), he kept it fairly standard this year- including his famous musical number in which he makes mention of each of the nominees for Best Picture. The first major award of the night went to Octavia Spencer for her supporting role in The Help. For Best Supporting actor, 82 year old Canadian Christopher Plummer took home the prize for his role in The Beginners. In doing so, Plummer made history as the oldest first-time Academy Award Winner. The visual and audio section of the Awards was dominated by Hugo, which won 5 Awards for its accomplishments in sound and visuals. In the surprise of the night, Meryl Streep won Best Actress in a leading role for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady. Many had suspected that the Award would be won by Viola Davis of The Help. For Best Actor, Jean Dujardin took the statue for his portrayal in The Artist, a silent Black and White film which also took home the big prize of the night- Best Picture. Many of these great movies are already available to rent and to buy! Visit Crossover for more details on Academy Award nominated movies!
